Humanitarian work under attack again
In a direct targeting of Al-Shifa Hospital in Afrin, north of Aleppo, the Syrian Democratic Forces and the regime forces committed a massacre on Saturday evening, June 12, killing more than 18 martyrs and 35 injured.
The direct targeting of the hospital and rescue teams was in clear violation of international laws and human rights, which caused the death of two humanitarian workers in the Shafak organization, and two death from medical personnel working at the hospital, the injury of 3 volunteers from the Civil Defense, and many injured civilians as well, in addition to huge material losses in Medical equipment and ambulances, and given the weight of the number of injured, the final death toll of martyrs is on the rise from one moment to the next.
It must be noted that the bombing of the regime forces, which elected by the World Health Organization as a member of its Executive Council on May 28, 2021, affected more than 35 medical facilities, 3 of which were out of service, only during 2020, in addition to the damage to the mobile medical teams.
The targeting was not limited to medical facilities only, as, on June 9, 2021, the regime forces bombed with artillery a school in Al-Abrar camp with direct targeting, which led to it being out of service and depriving the camp’s students of school seats. It is the eighth school targeted during the past two years for the Syria Relief organization, when more than 37 attacks on schools were recorded during the year 2020.
We in Violet strongly condemn this targeting, which is a clear violation of international laws and human rights. We demand the necessary protection for hospitals and medical facilities that provide treatment services to more than four million civilians in northwestern Syria.
